Since 1969, La Romera has spent a total of nine years of her life in Spain, living amongst the gypsies, studying, performing and learning the complexities of the art of flamenco. While in Sevilla, she studied with Spain’s most legendary gypsy dancer, El Farruco as well as the famous Manolo Marin. In Madrid, her art was further refined by training from the world renowned Ciro and honed to a technical brilliance through study with the Maestra Maria Magdelana. Added to the illustrious list of teachers the recent training and inspiration of the great Gypsy dancer, Concha Vargas.
She made her professional debut in Sevilla in 1971. She performed as a featured soloist in tablaos (flamenco dinner theaters) in Spain’s major cities and taught flamenco dance classes in Madrid and Sevilla.
A native Californian, she returned to her home state in 1993 after living in Seattle, Washington for 14 years. While living in Seattle, she became the Northwest’s most active promoter of the art of Flamenco, producing monthly flamenco events, and sponsoring guest artists and teachers to enrich the Northwest community.
While in Washington, La Romera conducted workshops and lecture demonstrations, served as an artist in residence in Washington State public schools and participated in the King County Arts Touring Program.
She has served as artist -in -residence with the Professional Artists in the School Program with the Cultural Council for Monterey County, and on the roster of the California Arts Council Touring Artist Program .
In 1997 La Romera was choreographer and dance soloist with the Monterey Opera Association’s production of “Carmen”.
In Santa Cruz County, La Romera a Cultural Council of Santa Cruz County grant recipient and is an artist with Santa Cruz County’s SPECTRA program for arts in the schools.
Her company, ¡Duende! Flamenco has performed to standing ovations throughout the United States. She is a 2003 Calabash Award recipient; an award for excellence in the arts and contribution to the Santa Cruz commmunity.
From June 1997 - April 2006, La Romera produced monthly shows at Don Quixote’s International Music Hall where she invited leading flamenco guest artists from Spain and the Bay Area to share the stage with her.
She taught flamenco dance classes in the counties of Santa Cruz, Monterey and Santa Clara from 1993 - 2006.
La Romera recently moved to Cleveland, Ohio in May 2006 where she will continue to offer flamenco dance classes and performances.
